Dolores Marie Primack was born November 27, 1934, the youngest of seven children raised by Anthony & Lydia Dynka Primack. She grew up in North Vandergrift near Foundry Row. In the '50s, she worked the switchboard at The Valley Daily News alongside, among others, future Pulitzer-winning photographer Eddie Adams. She married Max Israel in July 1959; their song at the time was, no kidding, "Charlie Brown" by The Coasters. They were together 51 years until his death in 2010. In June 1963, she & Dad adopted me, (Shawn Israel) at the age of four months. The house was always filled with music--both were ardent record collectors--& pets, usually a dog & a cat. She made the best meatloaf ever. She drilled me incessantly on my spelling & math homework. She loved to play poker (5- or 7-card draw, not hold 'em) & later Scrabble with family. She couldn't get enough of The Bee Gees. She taught me to read AND tell time via a book titled "What Time Is It?" She fostered in me a deep appreciation for the comedy of Ernie Kovacs. Christmas wasn't the same without heaping bowls of her matzo ball soup. She survived breast cancer following surgery & radiation treatments in 2010. She was a diehard fan of The Guiding Light, & later The Young and The Restless. She loved to text, once summoning for help to remove "a ****ing bat in the house." Despite increasing physical limitations resulting from a fall in 2016, she still insisted on sleeping in her bed upstairs. On warm nights, she enjoyed a glass of blackberry Merlot on the back deck swing. In 24/7 care since her stroke back in February, Mom passed away early this morning, peacefully. She was the last of her generation in my family. Love you always, Ma. And thank you.
