Obituary

George Vernon Belles, Sr., 78, of Vandergrift, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on January 26, 1948, he was the son of the late Vernon Belles and Margaret Dombroski, and his stepfather, John Dombroski and step mother Delores Belles.

George graduated from Kiski Area High School, Class of 1966, and proudly served his country as a United States Marine, becoming a Vietnam veteran in 1967. He later retired from Allegheny Ludlum in 2010, where he worked on the pickle line with dedication and pride.

What defined George more than anything was his extraordinary commitment to serving his community. His fire service journey began remarkably early as he became the very first junior firefighter in 1964, paving the way for generations of young volunteers who followed in his footsteps. From the moment he stepped into the firehouse, he found his calling. George rose through the ranks with determination, leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility, ultimately serving as Fire Chief from 1980–1993.He volunteered for forty years as an attendant and driver for the local ambulance service.

As Chief, he was known for his steady presence, his calm under pressure, and his unwavering devotion to protecting others. He trained countless firefighters, responded to emergencies day and night, and helped shape the department into a stronger, more unified team. His legacy in the fire service is one of courage, mentorship, and a lifetime of selfless service that will be remembered for years to come.

George was also a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ford City. Outside of service, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, played softball, loved bowling, and had a fondness for gambling. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, who were the heart of his world.

He is survived by his wife of  50 years, on 4-10-2026. Deborah (Cook) Belles of Vandergrift; his son George "Duggie" (Stefani) Belles of Vandergrift; and his grandson, Joseph Robert Belles, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by four sisters: Christina Craft of North Carolina, Lavern Belles of Cabot, and Vicky Belles of Freeport; his sister‑in‑law Sandy (Don) Ament of Dime Road; five brothers: Ralph (Robin) Belles of Marienville, John Dombroski of Vandergrift, Vernon (Peggy) Belles of Chicora, Russell (Chris) Belles of Freeport; his brother‑in‑law Robert (Linda) Cook Jr. of Dime Road; and several nieces, nephews and his Goddaughter Amy Perroz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, John Dombroski, step mother Delores Belles, and a brother Bert Belles.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, March 25 from 2 to 4 pm. and 6-8 pm. Fireman's last call service at 7pm. and on Thursday March 26 from 12 till the time of service at 1 pm at the Janette L. Gamble Funeral Home Inc., 2842 River Road, Vandergrift, PA 15690, with Pastor Scott Kifer officiating
