Obituary

Winifred (Winnie) (Gassner) Burke, of Apollo, PA (formerly of Elizabeth, PA) passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on March 26, 2026 at Concordia of Cabot after an extended illness. Born July 1935 to Joseph and Madeline (Spohn) Gassner in Sharpsville, PA. she graduated from West Newton High School and later married the love of her life, William (Bill) Burke, who preceded her in death in 2001.

Over the years, Winnie held several work positions. Her work included being a sorter at USS, Sherburn Draperies where she was a seamstress, and as an assistant salesperson at Camper's Center in Elrama, that her husband was part owner of. Most recently, she worked as Customer Service/Lottery at Payday's Grocery in Elizabeth PA where she retired from prior to moving in with her daughter and family in Apollo in the early 2000s. Everyone in Elizabeth knew her as the Lottery Lady!

Winnie loved her family and traveling with them. She particularly loved Disney World, where she made the trip three times in 2000. She went on many trips with her family over the years including many trips to Florida, Myrtle Beach, Las Vegas, Utah, and California. She loved to play the slots and enjoyed weekly trips to the Meadows, the Rivers and most recently Live casino in Greensburg. She also loved sewing and made many articles of clothing for family over the years. Winnie was also the best hockey grandma ever, watching her grandson's games as much as possible traveling to out of state games as well as games in Canada. Needless to say, she was a huge Pittsburgh Penguin fan too. Winnie even had her own cowbell!

Her dedication to family will be missed! Mom always had a meal on the table (or instructions on how to finish one if she had to be at work). She was a great cook and her recipes will be passed on through the generations. Her tender hand was always there to sooth us during our illnesses and she never even minded sitting near a car sick child on road trips! She even taught Gary how to eat green beans (family joke but true). A huge chunk of our collective hearts is gone, but we take solace in knowing that she is finally reunited with the love of her life.

Winnie is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Gary) Clark; sons, William (Rose) Burke, Jr. and David A. Burke; her grandchildren: Justin (Jenifer) Clark, Kristopher (Sheila) Clark, Brian Clark, Belle and Dakota Burke, and David C. Burke; and her great-grandchildren: Eliza, Blake, Nolan and Nicholas.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband William Burke.
